I make my bed, tuck the corners in
pull on a quilt from my grandma’s hand
colors soft like the sky before dawning
She used to run through the rows of corn
race her pa to the old red door
and she milked under stars every morning

All this cloth is made
into our patterned days

When my mother came along
the call of the world was strong
so she traded the fields for flying
In the Congo’s heavy heat
she found cloth like she’d never seen
cut squares of the jungle on fire

All this cloth is made
into our patterned days

Through the glass in this new highrise
looking down on the East Side
I can see the shape of every street
and I do my best to see them
as patterns of the farmland
and the quilts that are a part of me

I used to wait at the edge of dawn
for the sunsparks coming on
till the stars gave way to the morning
Now city lights set the night aflame
but they fade in the morn the same
and the quilts on my bed keep me warmer
